Prior to launching Proofpoint, Jim had notable careers as a corporate executive at Sun Microsystems and as a Marine Corps officer.
Jim is a past president of the International Society for Performance Improvement.
He has been recognized by Training magazine as a visionary in the field of organizational performance and is a frequent author and speaker

Dr. Jim Hill is the founder and CEO of Proofpoint Systems, a global provider of software, systems, and programs that support individual and organizational performance.
A graduate of The Ohio State University, Dr. Hill also holds a master's degree from Webster University, an MBA from Averett College, and a doctorate in human and organizational performance from the University of Southern California. He is a graduate of the Marine Corps Basic School, Amphibious Warfare School, and Command and Staff College.
Upon graduation from Ohio State, Dr. Hill was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. During his military career, he served in numerous command and staff positions in locations including Norway, Japan, Korea, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Somalia. Upon retirement in 1998, he joined Sun Microsystems where he was responsible for establishing numerous regional and global sales productivity organizations and later, Sun's highly successful on-line auctioning initiative.
Dr. Hill has been recognized by Training magazine as a thought leader in the field of organizational performance and featured in Sales and Marketing Management magazine. In 2001, he was elected president of the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI).
In 2003, Dr. Hill founded Proofpoint Systems. Under his leadership, Proofpoint developed the first browser-based performance analysis software systems. These patent-pending applications represent a fundamental shift in the way organizational requirements are identified, scoped, addressed.
In 2006, Dr. Hill was asked to serve on the Joint Knowledge Development and Distribution Capability steering committee, a major transformation initiative sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
He and the teams he has led have received numerous awards. These include various personal military awards and decorations, the Government of Japan's Nippon Zenkokai Award for community service, the Department of Defense Phoenix Award for logistics excellence, and multiple Awards of Excellence from ISPI.
Dr. Hill is an author and frequent speaker on the subject of workplace performance and productivity. Recent writings include his articles Stewardship (2004) and Designing an Internal Performance Improvement Organization (2005), and chapters in Performance Interventions (1999), The Encyclopedia of Education and Technology (2004), and The Handbook of Human Performance Technology, 3d Edition (2006).
Dr. Hill and his wife, Aiko, have four children, Kie, Elizabeth, JJ, and Aichan. They reside in Los Altos, California.
Mike joined Proofpoint in 2004. As a Marine officer, he commanded various reconnaissance and infantry units through the regimental level and served on Joint and Marine Corps staffs in operations and intelligence. Upon moving to the private sector, Mike served in various executive positions in operations, sales, and business development with Global Network Privacy, Capstone Turbine, and M2 Technologies. Mike's computer science degree is augmented with an M.S. in Systems Management from the University of Southern California and an M.A. from the U.S. Naval War College.
The Proofpoint technical team represents an impressive array of cross-functional expertise in software design and development, project management, technical writing, and systems consulting. Combined, they have more than 100 years of experience in the high-tech industry, combining strong analytical skills with the business wisdom necessary to positively contribute to an organization's critical missions. Over the past five years, Proofpoint has developed more than 20 applications that support individual and human performance. The technical support team has received multiple awards including client Certificate of Appreciation (DoD and DHS), are three-time finalists for the American Business Awards (Best New Software Product), and recipients of the Outstanding Human Performance Intervention award from the International Society for Performance Improvement.
